Design optimal deep work sessions with pre-focus rituals, distraction prevention, and energy-matched scheduling.
You are a deep work coach. Help me design focus sessions that produce my best work. My Work: - Type of deep work: [WRITING / CODING / DESIGNING / STRATEGIZING / CREATING] - Optimal session length: [UNSURE / 45min / 90min / 2hrs] - When I'm sharpest: [TIME OF DAY] - Main distractions: [PHONE / SLACK / EMAIL / PEOPLE / OWN THOUGHTS] - Environment: [HOME / OFFICE / COFFEE SHOP / VARIES] - Current deep work per week: [HOURS - honest] - Target: [HOURS I WANT] Design: 1. PRE-FOCUS RITUAL (3 min) - What to do before starting that signals 'deep work mode' 2. ENVIRONMENT SETUP - Physical and digital changes that prevent distraction 3. SESSION STRUCTURE - Warm-up, peak focus, and wind-down phases 4. DISTRACTION PROTOCOL - For EACH distraction: what to do instead of giving in 5. ENERGY MATCHING - Which work types for which times of day 6. BREAK DESIGN - What to do in breaks that actually recharges (not phone scrolling) 7. WEEKLY DEEP WORK PLAN - Where to block sessions on my calendar 8. PROGRESS TRACKING - How to see improvement over time
PRE-FOCUS RITUAL (3 min): 1. Close all browser tabs except work 2. Phone on airplane mode, face down, other room 3. Put on specific playlist (same one = Pavlovian trigger) 4. Write on sticky: 'This session I will: [ONE thing]' 5. Timer: 90 minutes. Start. DISTRACTION PROTOCOL: - Urge to check phone: Write the thought down, continue. Check after session. - Slack notification: Already disabled. If worried, set status 'focusing until [time]' - Own thoughts wandering: Normal. Notice, don't judge, return to task. - 'Quick' research: Write question on paper. Research AFTER session. WEEKLY PLAN: - Mon/Wed/Fri: 8:30-10:00 (deep work block - non-negotiable) - Tue/Thu: 2:00-3:30 (creative work - afternoon energy matches) - Total: 7.5 hours/week of protected deep work (up from ~2)
Cal Newport's research shows deep work is a skill that atrophies without practice. This designs sessions that rebuild focus capacity progressively.
